About

The AREDN Mesh Network

After many transformations and upgrades, currently AREDN is the culmination of decades of technological ingenuity and experimentation. With practicality being a primary driving force, users can rest assured they are utilizing the best possible tools available. AREDN is continuously improving, as a result of real-world implementations. Although each application is somewhat unique, the over-arching principles of the mesh network are not. So, there is little guess-work or trial and error, because we simply apply the concepts that have already been repeatedly proven to be effective.

AREDN OG is an independent, volunteer group of amateur radio operators who have dedicated their personal time and money to the project. Their opinions and viewpoints do not necessarily reflect those of AREDN, Inc, but AREDN OG strives to carry on and promote the goals and spirit of AREDN, Inc as closely as possible. Please feel free to learn more about AREDN, Inc by clicking LEARN MORE below. If you need more specific information on how to join as an operator, or if you want to host a node on your property, please keep reading below.

Node Operator

Any FCC license holder of TECHNICIAN class or greater

No experience is necessary to participate as a node operator. We will help you choose your equipment, flash and configure it, then walk with you step by step as you get onto the mesh network. After you've gotten started, you will not be left on your own- unless you choose to be. Several experienced operators will be available to assist you in updating and maintaining your node. If you are unable to afford the few-hundred dollars to become RF capable, AREDN OG has an equipment assistance program that will enable you to participate at no cost to you.

Since the strength of this network is built on redundancy, it is in everyone's interest to have as many operational nodes as possible. Since AREDN has proven to make communities more resilient, we don't want to see an operator excluded due to finances. We are 100% self-funded, and pay for everything out of pocket, so please don't abuse this program. However, don't hesitate to utilize it either.

Host a Node

Anyone can take part

You aren't a ham operator, you care nothing about the technological aspects, BUT you support the idea and want to strengthen your community. This is the place for you. Hands down, this is the most needed category of participant. In order to effectively implement the mesh network, we must have physical nodes in optimum locations. Tall buildings, towers, mountain tops, hospitals, water towers, etc., are a few examples of premium locations we are looking for. However, ANY and ALL locations can participate. Just because your node will not provide a 50 mile connection, doesn't mean your location can't be used.

If you choose to provide a small place on your property(ies), AREDN OG will: provide, install and maintain the node from start to finish. Currently, AREDN OG is not yet in the position to rent space on properties, but certain jurisdictions do offer tax write-offs for donating a portion of your property to public service charities such as this. However, AREDN OG will pay for any electricity used if the node is on commercial power. This will likely not exceed $10 per year, and we're happy to pay our own way. Please Contact us if you're interested in this option.

Founded in Flames

A Subdivision of OGARC

Off Grid AuxComm Radio Club”, was born in the flames of the disastrous Gatlinburg fires of 2016. Our founder was deployed to provide emergency services with communication, and saw first-hand how quickly systems we use every day can disappear. After eighteen rigorous hours, he realized that our dedicated first responders can quickly become hamstrung when they are unable to communicate. The chaotic experience prompted the creation of  the volunteer amateur radio club that exists today. AREDN OG is the division of the club that focuses primarily on the microwave applications, which are in the 2 and 5 GHz bands.*

*5 GHz is different from fifth generation (5G) cell service we see talked about everywhere today. It is the same technology used in your home wifi network.
